HS code
A standardised number used by customs authorities to classify traded goods.
The Harmonized System assigns codes to products by type and material. The first six digits are shared internationally; countries add further digits for their own tariffs.
The code determines the duty rate and whether any import restrictions apply. An incorrect code can lead to the wrong duty being charged or a shipment being held.
