Local acquiring now available in Mexico, Japan and India

Card payments from shoppers in Mexico, Japan and India can now be acquired domestically, with local settlement and per-payment routing data.

International Orders is a fictional brand used in a product prototype. This announcement is placeholder content.

Local Acquiring is now available for card payments from shoppers in Mexico, Japan and India. This brings the number of markets with domestic acquiring to 28 (illustrative figure).

What changes

When a shopper in one of these markets pays by card, International Orders routes the transaction to an acquiring path in that country instead of processing it cross-border. Issuers see a domestic transaction, which tends to improve approval rates and can remove cross-border scheme fees.

Each payment object now includes an acquiring_path field showing whether it was acquired locally or cross-border, and Acceptance Insights splits approval rates by path.

What you need to do

Nothing, if you already accept payments from these markets. Local acquiring is switched on by default for eligible accounts and applies automatically to new payments. You can opt out per market in the dashboard.

If you want to settle in local currency, add a settlement account in MXN, JPY or INR. Otherwise, funds are converted and settled in your existing currency through Multi-Currency & FX.

Market notes

  • Mexico. Domestic acquiring supports installments on eligible credit cards, known locally as meses sin intereses.
  • Japan. Domestic acquiring supports the major international schemes and the leading domestic card brand.
  • India. Card payments follow local rules on authentication and stored credentials. Recurring payments use mandates.

Early results

During the pilot, participating merchants saw card approval rates rise by 3 to 9 percentage points in these markets, depending on card mix (illustrative figures, not measured results).
