Network token
A substitute card number issued by the card network that replaces the real card number in storage and transactions.
A network token is tied to a specific merchant and is updated by the issuer when the underlying card changes. If it is stolen, it cannot be used elsewhere.
Issuers tend to approve tokenised transactions more often, and the token stays valid when a card is reissued, which reduces failed recurring payments.
