International Orders launches the Landed Cost API in 40 markets

Sellers can now calculate import duties and taxes at checkout in 40 destination markets with one API call, and show shoppers the full price up front.

International Orders is a fictional brand used in a product prototype. This release is placeholder content.

International Orders today announced general availability of the Landed Cost API, which calculates import duties, taxes and fees for cross-border orders at the moment of checkout. The API covers 40 destination markets at launch (illustrative figure).

What it does

A seller sends the destination country, the items in the order with their product classification codes, and the shipping cost. The API returns a line-by-line breakdown of duty, import tax and any applicable fees, in the shopper's currency, typically within a few hundred milliseconds (illustrative figure).

Sellers can show that breakdown at checkout and collect the full amount, so shoppers have nothing further to pay on delivery. The same quote is attached to the order, so the amount collected and the amount declared to customs match.

Why it matters

Unexpected charges on delivery are a common reason for refused parcels and support contacts in cross-border ecommerce. Showing the full landed cost before payment removes that surprise.

"We built this because sellers kept telling us the same thing: the payment worked, then the parcel came back," said Amara Nwosu, Vice President of Product at International Orders (fictional person). "Duties and taxes belong in the checkout total, not in a note from the carrier."

Availability

The Landed Cost API is available today to all International Orders accounts in the sandbox and in live mode. It works with Checkout Components, Hosted Checkout and the Unified Orders API. Classification assistance is available through Trade Compliance.

Pricing is per calculation, with details on the pricing page. Developers can start with the getting started guide.
